Vail Ski Resort is the largest ski resort in Colorado, and the resort says it's the second largest in North America, at 5,317 acres. The mountain runs from a base elevation of 8,120 feet to a summit of 11,570 feet, a vertical drop of 3,450 feet, served by 32 lifts and 278 trails. Vail reports an average of 354 inches of snow a year.

The Back Bowls account for nearly 3,000 acres of the terrain, and Vail pairs them with wide-open groomers. The terrain breaks down as 18% beginner, 29% intermediate and 53% advanced, and the longest run, Riva Ridge, is about four miles. With this much mountain, a first-timer should look at the trail map before picking a lift.

Vail opened in December 1962. It's owned and operated by Vail Resorts and is part of the Epic Pass. Before you go, check the current Vail ski conditions for weather, snowfall and snow depth.
