Purgatory Resort sits in the San Juan Mountains about 25 miles north of Durango. The resort lists 1,600-plus acres, 107 trails and 11 lifts, with a base at 8,783 feet, a summit at 10,812 feet and roughly 2,029 feet of vertical.

Purgatory describes its terrain as steep tree skiing alongside wide-open cruisers, and it reports about 260 inches of snow in an average year, often followed by sunny days. There are multiple terrain parks too, so a group with mixed ability levels and interests can all find something to ski.

The resort opened in 1965. It isn't on the Epic, Ikon, Mountain Collective or Indy passes, but its own season passes include partner days at other areas, so look at those before you buy lift tickets. When you're planning a trip, check the latest Purgatory ski conditions for snowfall and weather.
