8 Weeks Out
- Research and budget for movers or a truck rental
- Start decluttering — sell, donate or toss what you won’t bring
- Gather school and medical records
- Research your new neighborhood (see the Neighborhood Finder resources below)
6 Weeks Out
- Book your movers or truck rental
- Start collecting moving supplies: boxes, tape, bubble wrap
- Begin using up food you won’t want to move
- Look into moving/renters insurance coverage
4 Weeks Out
- File a USPS change of address
- Schedule utility transfers or shut-offs at the old place and set-up at the new one
- Notify your bank, subscriptions and important accounts of your new address
- Register kids for their new school district
2 Weeks Out
- Confirm moving-day details with your mover in writing
- Arrange childcare or pet care for moving day
- Start packing non-essential rooms and items
1 Week Out
- Pack a ‘first night’ box with essentials
- Confirm arrival logistics at the new place
- Empty and defrost the refrigerator
- Settle any final bills at the old address
Moving Day
- Do a walk-through and inventory check as items are loaded
- Keep essential documents (ID, lease, medical records) with you, not on the truck
- Do a final sweep of the old place before handing over keys
- Tip movers if service was good
After the Move
- Unpack systematically, room by room
- Update your address with the DMV, voter registration and insurance
- Explore your new neighborhood and register for local services
