New-resident deadlines for your driver's license and vehicle registration, plus how to register to vote — often the fastest thing to knock out once you've arrived.
New residents must get a California driver's license within 10 days of moving here (Cal. Vehicle Code §12505) and register any vehicle within 20 days. A smog check is generally required to register an out-of-state vehicle.
Register online any time up to 15 days before an election. After that, same-day "conditional" registration is available in person at your county elections office through Election Day. Getting or renewing a CA driver's license or ID automatically registers you to vote (Motor Voter) unless you opt out.
