Yountville

Yountville can make a claim that no other AVA in Napa Valley can: it's where the valley's wine history actually began. George Calvert Yount, the town's namesake, planted Napa Valley's first vineyard here around 1836, decades before anyone else in the valley had put a vine in the ground. The AVA that now carries his town's name was established much later, in 1999, but the connection to that first planting still shapes how people think about the district.

Yountville sits on the floor of the Napa River valley, bounded by hills to the north and west -- the Yountville Mounts among them -- that help define its climate without fully sealing it off from the bay. Cool, marine-influenced air and fog reach the AVA's northern edge, making Yountville one of the cooler growing districts in Napa Valley, distinctly different in feel from Oakville and Rutherford just up the road.

The soil here is gravelly silt loam mixed with alluvial clay, and geologists point to coastal-derived deposits in Yountville's ground that distinguish it from its immediate neighbor, Stags Leap District, just to the east -- two AVAs sitting close together but built on genuinely different geological material. That soil, combined with the cooler climate, tends to produce Cabernet Sauvignon with a reputation for real structure and tannin -- wines that are built to age rather than drink immediately, a style Yountville has become known for among people who cellar Napa Cabernet long-term.

Cabernet Sauvignon leads what's planted across Yountville's roughly 4,000 vineyard acres, but Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc all have a home here too, benefiting from the district's cooler-than-average conditions. With more than 100 vineyards and 34 wineries packed into a relatively compact AVA, Yountville has developed a genuine concentration of wine-focused businesses, reinforced by the town's separate reputation as one of Napa Valley's top destinations for food -- a small-town main street with an outsized number of well-regarded restaurants sitting right alongside the vineyards.

That pairing of history and hospitality is what sets Yountville apart. It isn't just the site of Napa's first vineyard; it's become, almost two centuries later, one of the valley's most complete small towns -- a place where the wine, the history and the town itself all point back to the same origin, sitting quietly in the middle of the valley George Yount first planted.
