NAPA VALLEY AVAs

Rutherford

A historic stretch of central valley floor known for its own distinct soil character, home to some of Napa's oldest wineries.

Rutherford sits almost exactly in the middle of Napa Valley, established as an AVA in 1993 on the same day as its neighbor Oakville, and its reputation rests on two of the oldest, most storied wineries in California wine history: Beaulieu Vineyard and Inglenook, both founded well over a century ago on this stretch of valley floor.

Geographically, Rutherford occupies a kind of sweet spot. It sits south of St. Helena and north of Oakville, and its climate splits the difference between the two -- cooler than St. Helena, warmer than Oakville, and drawing less fog off the bay than Oakville does. That middle position gives Rutherford a long, reliable growing season without the extremes found closer to either end of the valley.

The soil is where Rutherford's identity gets more specific. Like Oakville, it's built on poorly-drained loam, silt loam and clay loam across floodplains and alluvial fans and terraces, but Rutherford's mix leans more heavily on marine sediment alongside its volcanic deposits -- a genuinely different geological recipe than the AVAs immediately to its north and south, even though all three sit on the same flat valley floor and are easy to mistake for interchangeable ground from a distance.

Cabernet Sauvignon is Rutherford's signature, though the AVA also grows Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Nebbiolo, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, Syrah and Zinfandel -- a genuinely wide range for an AVA this size. What growers and winemakers here have long argued is that Rutherford's particular mix of soil produces a specific character in its Cabernet, something distinct enough that longtime Napa winemakers have spent decades trying to describe it -- a certain earthy, dusty quality some call "Rutherford dust," though the exact origin of that phrase is more folklore than documented fact at this point.

What's not folklore is the winemaking history. Georges de Latour founded Beaulieu Vineyard here in 1900; Gustave Niebaum founded what became Inglenook even earlier. Both wineries have operated continuously (with some ownership changes) for more than a century, making Rutherford one of the few places in Napa Valley where you can taste wine from vines and wineries with a direct, unbroken line back to the valley's earliest days as a serious wine region -- long before "Napa Valley AVA" was a phrase anyone used.
