DMV & VOTING

Driver's License & Vehicle Registration

New-resident deadlines for your driver's license and vehicle registration, plus how to register to vote — often the fastest thing to knock out once you've arrived.

DRIVER'S LICENSE 30 days to get a new license
VEHICLE REGISTRATION 90 days to register
VOTER REGISTRATION 8 days before an election

Colorado counts you as a resident if you work or own a business here or have lived here 90 consecutive days. After that, transfer your driver's license within 30 days and register your vehicle within 90 days at your county motor vehicle office; license transfers require an appointment, ID and proof-of-address documents. Gas vehicles registered in Denver, Boulder, Broomfield, Douglas and Jefferson counties, and parts of Adams and Arapahoe, need an emissions test to register (newer model years are exempt) -- check the DMV's emissions page for current requirements and fees.

You can register in Colorado through Election Day. Every registered voter is mailed a ballot; to receive it by mail, register or update your registration (online at GoVoteColorado.gov, by mail, or at a DMV office) by the 8th day before the election. After that, register in person at a voter service and polling center.
