Watching and Playing Across the Area

Spectators in Houston attend events that include teams from five major professional sports leagues and collegiate sports. Participants also take part in activities such as running in Memorial Park and sailing on Galveston Bay and Clear Lake.

Several other sports are available in the area, including nearly a dozen fencing clubs. These range from recreational clubs to elite competitive organizations.

Houston does not have an NHL team.

Major League Teams and Venues

Houston has six professional major league teams: the Houston Astros, Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, Houston Dynamo FC, Houston Comets in 2027, and Houston Dash. The Astros won World Series titles in 2017 and 2022, while the Rockets won back-to-back NBA titles in 1994 and 1995.

The Dynamo won the MLS Cup in 2006 in their first year after moving from San Jose, California, and repeated as champions in 2007. Daikin Park, home of the Astros, and Toyota Center, home of the Rockets, are located in Downtown Houston; other facilities include Shell Energy Stadium, the Reliant Astrodome, and Reliant Stadium.

Daikin Park and Toyota Center are both in Downtown Houston. Their location has contributed to an urban renaissance that transformed Houston’s center into a day-and-night destination.

Former Teams in Houston

Houston was home to the now-defunct WNBA Comets from 1997 to 2008. The Comets won four consecutive WNBA Championships, still the most championships of any sports team in Houston and the biggest title streak in Texas.

The AFL/NFL Oilers called Houston home from 1960 to 1997 before moving to Tennessee and becoming the Titans; they won AFL championships in 1960 and 1961. Houston also had Aeros hockey teams in the WHA, IHL, and AHL, and World TeamTennis teams called the E-Z Riders, Astro-Knots, and Wranglers.

Houston Aeros teams won the Avco World Trophy in 1974 and 1975, the Turner Cup in 1999, and the Calder Cup in 2003.

College Sports, Annual Events, and Local Leagues

Four NCAA Division I college athletic programs play within Houston, with the University of Houston as the sole member of a Power Four conference. Prairie View A&M University is located in the metropolitan area, and college facilities include TDECU Stadium, Fertitta Center, and First Community Stadium.

Annual events include the Houston Open, Texas Bowl, Houston College Classic, Bayou Bucket Classic, Labor Day Classic, U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships, and international rugby matches at BBVA Stadium. Houston also has an adult cricket league established in the 1970s, youth cricket clubs and leagues, and renewed interest in roller skating during the COVID-19 pandemic in Texas.

Houston hosted the Masters Grand Prix in 1976, the Tennis Masters Cup in 2003 and 2004, and multiple matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
