Essence of Mexico Presented by Young Audiences of Houston

Travel south of the border with Mixteco Ballet Folklorico on a vibrant journey through Mexico’s rich cultural traditions. The performance begins in the northern state of Nuevo León, where European influences from Germany, Austria, Poland, and Czechoslovakia shaped lively dances such as the Polka, Schottische, and Huapangos Norteños. The program then moves to Veracruz, where intricate “zapateado” footwork reflects the influence of Spanish flamenco. In the spirited “Zapateado Jarocho,” dancers take turns showcasing their skill, culminating in the beloved “La Bamba,” as performers attempt to tie a knot with a flowing red sash. The finale celebrates Jalisco, the birthplace of mariachi music. As the sounds of trumpets, violins, and guitars fill the air, dancers make a grand entrance in colorful, ribbon-adorned dresses, joined by charros in traditional sombreros. The performance concludes with the iconic “Jarabe Tapatío,” known worldwide as the Mexican Hat Dance. ¡Viva México!
